GARLIC PLANTED

I took today off from work and one thing I accomplished was to plant garlic. I piggy-backed the garlic in the nasturtium bed. They are good companion plants. While the nasturtiums are finishing up their season, they will provide shade and mulch for the… Continue Reading “GARLIC PLANTED”

CROP ROTATION MADE EASY

As I waffle about how much of a fall/winter garden I want to deal with this year, I knew crop rotation is important. My method to figure out what to plant where, though, has been rather haphazard. I’d google to see if a specific… Continue Reading “CROP ROTATION MADE EASY”

FIRST FROST

We got through our first frost with ease since the greenhouse was finished before it got so cold. The next week is forecast to be in the low 70’s during the day and the 40’s and 50’s at night. The beets are flourishing: The… Continue Reading “FIRST FROST”

IT’S COMING

LAZY SATURDAY

Today was a bit of a lazy day. With the heat we’re having, outside projects are limited to watering the garden and taking care of the chickens. Everything else was accomplished in the blessed air conditioning. After lazing about longer than usual, I started… Continue Reading “LAZY SATURDAY”

The Greenhouse is Covered

After my thumb had a day of rest, (if you missed it, my thumb had an unfortunate encounter with a mandolin slicer), we finally got the plastic over the hoop house. The clips I bought to secure the plastic to the hoop house didn’t… Continue Reading “The Greenhouse is Covered”

Hello Autumn, Goodbye Summer

The projects have been slowing down as Fall starts. We aren’t struggling to fit so much into our evenings and weekends. The cooler weather has been glorious. The reduction in the bug population has been wonderful. The ragweed? Not so welcome. Greenhouse: the hoops… Continue Reading “Hello Autumn, Goodbye Summer”

Fall Garden Progress

With time off from work last week, I made good progress on my fall garden. Monday, while Oscar was also off from work, we got the frame and hoops together for the 8′ x 12′ hoop house greenhouse. We placed it over the galvanized… Continue Reading “Fall Garden Progress”
